  • Stockade refurbishment chronicled at Welcome Center

GREENVILLE – It was an historic day in Greenville on Aug. 3, 1795 in the area about a block west of the Traffic Circle. History buffs already know what that day signifies, but for many of us the relevance of that day has been lost. That day would forever link General Anthony Wayne and the Native American tribes present that day to our community. That day is why Greenville is now known as the Treaty City. The Treaty put an end to the Northwest Ohio Indian War and more or less made Greenville the Gateway to the West long before St. Louis grabbed that title. In recognition of the 225th anniversary of the signing, the Fort GreeneVille Chapter Daughters of the American Revolution and the City of Greenville restored the stockades at the Greenville City Park. The stockades gave a nod to this area’s history and the location Fort GreeneVille. Due to COVID and a demand for construction materials, the project took longer than anticipated and was completed this past summer – a year after the 225th anniversary. The stockades were built in the early 1940s around the same time the lagoon, small arch foot bridge, Girl Scout lodge and the swinging bridge were built. All evidence indicates the stockades were part of the generosity of Fred Coppock, founder of American Aggregates. Many years ago, the area of the stockades and the fort walls were used as program areas during the Greenville Treaty City Camporee. Boy Scouts from Ohio and other parts of the Midwest met on a weekend in May during odd numbered years at Greenville City Park to commemorate the Treaty. The Miami Valley Council sponsored the weekend, which attracted more than 1,000 Scouts. The restoration was a group effort from the following – Coppock Hole Foundation, Harry D. Stephens Memorial Trust, City of Greenville and the Greenville Street Department, Fort GreeneVille Daughters of the American Revolution, Friends of the Greenville City Parks and Project Manager Tom Lucas, Dan Myers from Myers Excavating and Construction, and Mike Wise from Lasting Legacy Memorials. Pictures of the renovation are currently available to view in the window of the Welcome Center, 421 S. Broadway, Greenville, Ohio 45331.

  • Park National Bank Heat Wave First Friday is July 9

GREENVILLE – Summer is here and temperatures have been soaring. Let’s celebrate the season with the Park National Bank Heat Wave First Friday. Due to the holiday weekend, the First Friday event has been moved to the second Friday of the month on Friday, July 9. This will be a great opportunity to come downtown to shop, dine, have a little fun or enjoy some music. In addition to First Friday events, Darke County Center for the Arts will host Barbecue & Blues and downtown Greenville will come alive with people and activities. The Park National Bank Heat Wave First Friday will run from 6-9 p.m. and will stretch from YOLO Park to Rotary Park. Darke County Parks (DCP) has been present for several of our events this year to display some of their animals, but this time they will be doing a few special programs. The Parks’ naturalists are known for their work in the schools and their summer camps where they educate kids of all ages. They will be bringing a few of their programs to the Park National Bank Heat Wave First Friday. Join DCP on the Courthouse lawn for three special events - Animals of Darke County Meet & Greet (6:15 p.m.), Bicycle Safety (7:15 p.m.) and Kayaking Safety (8:15 p.m.). If you have a child that likes to ride a bicycle, get there early. DCP will be handing out free bicycle helmets while they last. DCP will also be working with our local businesses to host Animal Tracks. Children are invited to go to these businesses and make a “rubbing” with a provided crayon. Collect all of the tracks and bring them back to the courthouse lawn where the naturalist will present them with a prize. The fun may begin with DCP, but that isn’t where it ends. There will be a lot more to do. Bring you swim trunks or clothes you don’t mind getting wet. Enjoy the water feature at YOLO Park or participate in some of our water games. Main Street Greenville will have over 1,000 water balloons available for a water balloon toss beginning at 6:30 p.m. Grab a friend or a parent and line-up to see who can toss a water balloon the furthest. There will also be bubbles, sidewalk chalk and more. Who is the fastest cookie eater? We will find out 6 p.m. on Friday, July 9 when Beanz Buttercream Bakery hosts its cookie eating contest. They already have their 12 contestants picked, but it is going to be a lot of fun to see who wins this high calorie, fast-paced event. The event will take place at the bakery. Music will fill the air throughout downtown, which means you won’t miss a thing happening at DCCA’s Barbecue & Blue. If you are attending that event, grab a DORA (Designated Outdoor Refreshment Area) cup and head downtown. If you need a refreshing treat, St. Paul’s Lutheran Church will be handing out ice cream beginning at 6 p.m. while supplies last. Make sure you stop by and see them on Fourth Street. Keep watching Main Street Greenville’s social media for additional events and activities. Tickets for Barbecue & Blues are available at the Welcome Center, 421 S. Broadway, Greenville. • Scavenger & Easter Egg Hunt highlight First Friday

GREENVILLE – Main Street Greenville is pleased to announce downtown Greenville’s Scavenger and Easter Egg Hunt First Friday on Friday, April 2. Although the Scavenger Hunt is not new to the First Friday line-up, the Easter Egg Hunt will be new for 2021. The Scavenger Hunt will be held throughout the day and will end at 9 p.m. Gift cards from our downtown merchants will be hidden and a different business or businesses will be featured each hour beginning at 1 p.m. Follow Main Street Greenville on Facebook and you will get a clue as to where the gift card is hidden. We ask that the person finding the gift card take a selfie and tag Main Street Greenville in your post so others will know that the gift card has been found. A different clue and a different card will be available each hour. Some of the cards may be hidden inside downtown businesses while others may be hidden in front of those businesses. It is up to you to unlock the clue and find the card. The Easter Egg Hunt will begin at 6 p.m. and continue until 9 p.m. This is not your traditional Easter Egg Hunt where a child would go and collect the eggs. With this being in the downtown area we want our children to be safe. We will have approximately 40 eggs hidden throughout downtown and in YOLO and Rotary Parks. The eggs will be easy to find. Instead of taking the egg with the child, we ask that you open the egg and grab the piece of paper that is in the egg. There will be a different marking or a different color for each piece of paper and we ask that you don’t take all of the papers out of the egg. Leave some for others. Those pieces of paper can then be turned in at the Welcome Center, 421 S. Broadway, Greenville, for a prize. The more pieces of paper you collect, the better your chance of winning one of two Easter Baskets. There will be a place on the paper for you to write the child’s name and phone number. Many of our downtown businesses will be open late to help you do some last minute shopping before Easter. They will also be offering special promotions and events throughout the Scavenger and Easter Egg Hunt First Friday. Keep watching Main Street Greenville’s social media pages for more information.
