  • Call for Local Artists!

Artisan Stroll is the theme for Main Street Greenville's First Friday event held in October, which has everything to do with handmade, homemade, and artisan craft! The event will be held from 6-9 pm in the downtown district on Friday, October 3rd. The committee (consisting of Patti Jetter, Kim Murray, Mary Saintignon, Victoria Horsley, Fran Brubaker, Deb Niekamp, and Susan Fowble) is working with Main Street Greenville's Director, Amber Garrett, to plan the Artisan Stroll and they are looking for artisans and crafters to display and sell their paintings, photography, handmade jewelry, dolls, children’s apparel, wreaths, flower arrangements and more during the event. All local artists and talented creative people are invited to sell and/or demonstrate their craft. The artists will join many downtown businesses who will be staying open late for October’s First Friday event. The event will also feature music and Chalk the Block (a chalk-art contest for those who attend the event)! Registration to showcase and sell your items is $15.00 per space, which is a donation to Main Street Greenville (a non-profit organization). The deadline to sign-up is September 10th, 2014. For more information contact committee member Susan Fowble at 937-548-1414 or fowble51@gmail.com. Thank you to Stephanie Schieltz for creating the sidewalk chalk art for our promotions of this event. #events

  • Follow Baleigh!

Thank you to Baleigh, who is the intern for the Darke County Visitors Bureau. She joined us during August's First Friday event and shared her thoughts in this post. Thank you for featuring downtown Greenville during your "Follow Baleigh" tour this summer! If you want to follow Baleigh to the other sights and attractions in Darke County - give the Darke County Visitors Bureau's Facebook page a "like"! It has been yet another exciting week at The Darke County Visitors Bureau! With the relocation of the office, preparations for grand opening, my first experience on the radio with Alex Mikos at WTGR, a...nd all of the festivals and events taking place in Darke County, Deanna and I still found time to venture out into the community of downtown Greenville. This time around, we walked on Broadway, the main street of downtown Greenville so that I could experience Main Street Greenville’s First Friday event for August. The theme for the month was live musicians, but just for fun, there were spontaneous artists scattered all around downtown including a yard bomber! Also dispersed down the street were blue balloons with a Sharpie marker attached to them so visitors could share their ties to downtown Greenville. It was so fun to read these messages on the balloons, the memories shared and why they have come to Greenville or back to Greenville. With so much to do and see, it’s no wonder why Broadway is so popular for this event which takes place every first Friday from March through December. I spoke with George Luce who is a frequent attendee of this monthly get-together. He shared with me that he and his lovely wife along with two other couples plan to come to Broadway for the event, and “mingle with other people, have dinner, and just hang out.” His favorite part of First Friday events: The people. This was a message I heard from everyone single person I interviewed. With a goal of “working to preserve the historic and traditional character of our built environment,” Main Street Greenville has put these events together for the past few years with much success. Their fearless leader for the past year and a half has been Mrs. Amber Garrett who has put her heart and soul into this organization with the goal of bringing more people and attention to downtown Greenville. I don’t know about you, but by looking down the streets, I believe she has accomplished this goal! Not only are First Friday’s a good time for all of the people that attend, but it also helps make business BOOM downtown. I spoke with several business owners, and they all agreed that First Friday’s are beneficial to their shops. Kirsten Berghoff, owner of Sadie Grace, had this to say when asked if her shop benefited from the event; “Most definitely. We stay busy the entire time. We are usually open past nine o’clock every first Friday, so it is a lot of fun.” Not only is Sadie Grace experiencing a surge in sales during the First Friday festivities, most of the store owners along Broadway agree including Aaron and Betsy Ward, owners of the The A & B Coffee & Cake Co. and Lelah Shoop, co-owner of YOUNIQUES BOUTIQUE. An estimated 1,500 people turned out for this event in August, but since this was my first rodeo, I wanted to know what brings people back each month. To answer this question, I turned to Greenville native and owner of The Coffee Pot, Rob Garrett, who said that his favorite part is “Seeing people downtown. When we were younger, everybody used to come downtown and cruise Broadway. So on Friday and Saturday nights, there was always something to do. This stopped a long time ago, and I don’t think that kind of stuff will ever come back because it’s a generational thing. Times are different now. So, it’s events like First Friday that remind people that they can come and have a good time downtown.” When making plans for next month, be sure to come to First Friday in downtown Greenville, and enjoy some good ole’ family fun. The event takes place on Friday, September 5, and the theme is “Theatre on Third” where a movie will be shown on the side of a building on West Third Street. You can even have a say in what movie is shown. Main Street Greenville is asking for your help in selecting the movie. The choices are: The Lego Movie, E.T. the Extraterrestrial, or Free Birds. Go to DarkeJournal.com to vote. Till next week! Baleigh #events #press

  • August's First Friday!

On August 1st, we celebrated another fun First Friday as a community. An estimated 1,500 joined us downtown Greenville for an evening filled with live music, shopping, eating, and spontaneous art projects! As with every First Friday event, we have many people to thank. Thank you to Jennifer Murray. Jennifer has been an intern for Main Street Greenville this summer. When she started, we discussed potential projects she could complete as part of her time with our organization. Jen loves art, so a temporary art installation project fit her personality perfectly. We found the following statement and felt it fit the project and downtown Greenville: "A Beautiful Moment Has Happened Here". She put together a wonderful team of volunteers who each created unique bits of temporary art throughout the downtown district for the event and created a few items for the night as well. Jen has been an awesome team member for Main Street Greenville. We will miss her spunk and creativity as she leaves for college this fall. We wish her all of the best and thank her for her time and dedication to downtown Greenville over the summer. I hope you come home to visit often and stop by to say hello whenever you do. Thank you to all of the artists who created bit of art for Jen's project. As someone who enjoys spontaneous things, this project added so much fun to the event. I love coming across random things when I am visiting somewhere. Things that make you stop and just look a little longer. Things that make you smile or inspire you. All of the creations did just that. Your paper collage and sidewalk chalk characters were adorable. Aimee Nelson (from Skein Full of Love), your yarn bomb bench project turned out even better than I expected. It was so vibrant and colorful. I love the fact that it is still there as of today. Kim Berry (from Young Forest Martial Arts), your paper crafts are so beautiful. They looked gorgeous in your window displays and I hope to purchase one for my office soon. Stephanie Schieltz, your "A Beautiful Moment Has Happened Here" Balloon Project truly inspired me. To read all of the little moments people took the time to share, really reminded me of just how much downtown Greenville matters to our community. I witnessed many people stop to read the balloons or take time to share a moment. Very cool. Amy Barger, your interactive photo booth was a perfect fit for your outgoing personality. Photo booths are just fun. Add an Amy Barger and they are even more fun. I am so glad you were able to return to Team Main Street Greenville for the evening. I miss you. Quincy Baltes, your window painting was beautiful. I loved the details and the colors. You are one talented fellow. Thank you to Bach to Rock for sponsoring our event. Your continued support of our organization is appreciated. From financial support or allowing us to borrow equipment, you are always willing to help. Thank you to all of the musicians who shared your talents with us for the evening. A great mix of different genres! Thank you to Greenville National Bank for once again grilling out for the community and for collecting donations for our organization. You are true grilling masters! Thank you to First Congregational Church of Christ for passing out ice cream and providing games for everyone to enjoy - we were glad to have you join us. Thank you to all of the downtown businesses who stayed open late, hosted music, or offered specials at your establishments. And thank you to everyone who attended the event! Many beautiful moments happened that evening and they continue to happen daily. We are thankful so many people support our downtown and they appreciate what it adds to our community. Our next First Friday event will take place on September 5th. It will be another Theater on Third event (outdoor movie). Stay tuned for more info! Also, remember that on Saturday, September 6th the Rolling 50's Classics will hold their annual Fall Car Cruise-In downtown Greenville! See More #events

  • Thankful for Team Main Street Greenville!

Sunni has been an intern for Main Street Greenville this summer. As with all of my interns, this girl is a rockstar. She has helped me clean-up trash, move into a new office, work on our new website, make phone calls, assist with event planning, and so much more. Our watering van needed a tune-up this week - which made the flower pots very dry. Today, she helped me carry buckets of water for 2 hours in the heat, to give the flower pots a drink. There are many times I worry my interns will want to quit, because of some of the requirements. During our watering adventure today, Sunni shared she loves it and wishes her internship didn't have to end next week. Another young person who now has a love for downtown Greenville and our community. I hope she knows how proud I am of her work and how thankful I have been to have her by my side. Team Main Street Greenville! #volunteeropportunities
